INTRUDER ALARMS

Equipment

In order to provide the very best equipment available today, Streamline has chosen Aritech as its main supplier of intruder alarm control and signalling systems. Currently using the award winning Advisor range of equipment which has proved to be a most stable and reliable platform on which to build quality, user-friendly systems.

With recent advances in technology we have chosen the Visonic K980D 'Pet Smart' dual technology movement detector for installations where pets have the freedom to roam the property. To date these have proved to be extremely reliable and free from false alarms. For premises with no pets, Streamline uses the Aritech range of dual technology movement detectors. It is our belief (and experience) that the benefits of using dual technology movement detectors far outweigh the small additional costs associated with these devices.

There is a variety of methods of alerting people to an alarm activation; the most common being an audible local signal (external bell or siren) often coupled with a flashing stroboscopic light. These units are exposed to the elements and are probably the most vulnerable part of any intruder alarm system. They are also an obvious target for the intruder to attack. Our external sounders are constructed from tough ABS plastic with a galvanised steel inner cover providing additional protection against attack. All the electronics are fully encapsulated within a hard epoxy resin and are extremely resilient to moisture ingress.

Obviously the ‘bell only’ systems rely on the noise of the sounders to drive the intruder out and for a neighbour or passer-by to investigate and/or alert the police. Unfortunately, the police will not respond to reports of an audible alarm activation unless there is also a confirmation of an incident (break-in in progress or broken/damaged doors or windows). There are several methods of ‘signalling’ the break-in to a remote location ranging in complexity and therefore price:

Speech Dialler.
This device is (in its simplest form) an automatic dialling unit that plays a pre-recorded message when the person dialled answers the phone. Most, if not all today, can dial several different numbers and will keep trying until a pre-determined ‘kiss off’ signal is given by the recipient. Of course if all the numbers called do not answer then there will be no response and, the police will not respond to auto-diallers.

Digital Communicators. These units are dedicated modems of varying complexity. On activation by the alarm, a coded signal is sent to a manned Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). The duty operators are then tasked to call out the police and key-holders to attend the site. There is a small annual fee to have a manned ARC monitoring your alarm but the peace of mind given is well worth the cost and, in many cases, it is an insurance requirement.

High Security. For sites having a high risk of burglary or high sums insured there are two common high security methods of remote signalling in use today.

Redcare. A BT product that uses a high integrity signalling path through the telephone network between the ARC and the subscriber. The line is constantly monitored for faults and if any are found the ARC is informed. The system can be connected via a normal telephone line.

DualCom. A system that uses two signal paths to the ARC, radio and conventional telephone lines. The equipment installed in the subscribers premises constantly monitor both signal path integrity and cause a signal to be generated in the event of a fault on one or the other.

Both of these systems are more expensive than any of the other signalling systems but are often an insurance requirement for the high-risk situation.

The selection of a remote signalling device is one that involves the subscriber, insurer and security advisor. There are also other signalling systems available for special purposes.

Commercial and industrial customers may also have special requirements which necessitate the installation of alternative equipment, usually more robust or capable of covering large areas. We will be pleased to advise on these.

To date Streamline has had a zero fault rate using Aritech and Visonic equipment, which has pleased our customers and resulted in low operating cost for us and our customers.
